What About Water? Print E-mail

What services do we offer to the water industry?

When 25 or more people drink water from the same water well for at least five days a week, six months per year, or if there are fifteen or more service connections to that well, then the water system is a non-community public water supply and is required to have licensed coverage of that water system.  SWSS provides this coverage.

We are in close contact with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to ensure that your drinking water is safe for human consumption.  We sample your drinking water according to the sampling schedule set up especially for your system by the DEP.  We send these water samples to a state certified laboratory for analysis and then review that analysis to make sure your water is safe to drink.   If its not, then we act accordingly to ensure a safe drinking water supply.  We inspect your system regularly to ensure proper operation and, if you have a treament system, we work to achieve optimal performance of that system.  We conduct a cross-connection survey to ensure that potable water does not mix with non-potable water; we test your backflow devices and recommend repair or replacement if they are not functioning properly.

What about paperwork?

Water systems are required to complete, submit and keep on file a number of reports, including:

  • Annual Statistical Reports, to DEP by February 28 of each year
  • A Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is required by all community system on or before July 1 every year
  • Monthly water sample collection reports are due to DEP at the beginning of the following month
  • Chemical Usage reports are due monthly
  • Sample waivers, when appropriate
  • Public Notices are due in the event a sample "fails"
  • A cross-connection survey with report every 3 - 5 years
  • Sanitary Surveys (inspections) are conducted by the DEP on each water system every 3 -5 years.  There are several documents dealing with this inspection and we take care of all of them.
  • We also complete other forms as required, including NON's (Notices of Non-compliance), ACO's (Administration Consent Orders), Demonstration Study reports, copper and lead reports, Desktop Evaluation Studies, and many types of permits.
